Silhouette: The Dirndl Bra

As with all fashion – historical and modern – it’s important to recognize silhouette and the overall effect of line in the fashion.

If anything is needed more for the “proper” dirndl look it is the support of the bust line with the appropriate undergarment. It doesn’t really matter what style of bodice in the dirndl dress you have, the bust support is necessary and is especially desired when the dirndl bodice is rather low cut.

When I first started researching dirndls and sewing them I didn’t put too much thought into the undergarments because I quickly discovered that the dirndl is a modern fashion, and so, therefore, my modern undergarments would be just fine. However, it didn’t take me long to discover just how important it is for the bust to be supported in a good manner.

We can get away without a petticoat or petti-pants/drawers/bloomers under the dirndl, but the bra is, I’ve learned, an essential element.

Same dirndl but left is a modern “minimizer” bra and the right is with a balconette bra (plus dirndl hooks and front ribbon added).

So, just what kind of bra do you need for a dirndl??

Essentially, it is a BALCONETTE style.

This style is cut low around the top and does pretty much as its name: sit like a balcony. LOL It creates a “shelf” look. The balconette bra cut resembles the lower cut dirndl bodices and allows for the wide bodice neckline without exposing your bra while wearing. (Although, that can be another optional, “sexy” look to your dirndl – to have the bra visible under your blouse.)

Lots of styles are available in the balconette cut – which is generally an underwire shape supporting the bottom half of the bust, and providing maximum décolleté and cleavage. An ideal silhouette for a dirndl!

Of course, the balconette style may not be comfortable to you. (I’m still trying to adjust to the comfort and fit of it, myself.) So the next option is a classic push-up bra.

Remember, all figure types look lovely in a dirndl. A proper bra with great bust support and lift is key to getting the best silhouette in your dirndl.

P.S. I’ve read that sports bras support well when you want to dance to lively polkas. 😉

So glad you discussed this subject. I realized I have an undergarment which will work in this situation. I can’t bear the thought of having to purchase yet another bra.
